2021 Flooring Trends
Happy 2021! We are all happy that 2020 is over and done with and are looking forward to the rest of 2021! Today we are going to discuss what is trending for this year and what you are going to see a lot of from both designers and homeowners!
Type of flooring
Although hardwood, both engineered and solid, is still going to be a popular choice, people are starting to migrate towards favoring alternatives. One major alternative trend we are going to be seeing more of is vinyl. Because of the technical advances in the flooring industry, vinyl is able to look just like natural wood with less upkeep and maintenance. It is also durable and warm, which is what draws many people to hardwood, but they can get that same feel with vinyl for a more economical price. As more and more people stayed home in 2020, there is also a push to update their flooring to be more practical and “living proof.” Homeowners are wanting floor that is easy to clean, water resistant and child/pet proof.
Colors
Cool tones, lights and grays are going to be a huge trend in 2021! People are going for more airy and open feels in their house, which makes a light color floor the easy choice. We are going to see more blonde tones, especially in common areas like the kitchen and living room. People are also looking for a high variation within their flooring. In the past, most people wanted consistency throughout their flooring with little to no variation. Now, homeowners are favoring a more natural look in their flooring which includes dissimilarity throughout the panels to closer mimic what occurs in nature.
Patterns
We saw a rise in more creative flooring last year and it will continue throughout 2021. More people are looking at their flooring as a statement or creative piece rather than just the backdrop of their design. There is going to be an increase in herringbone, chevron, large format and wide planks. Flooring insets are also becoming more popular, whether it is a carpet inset, a tile inset or even a patterned floor inset. These allow your flooring to show off your creativity and design, while personalizing your home. In addition, we are also going to see an increase in textured floors, meaning handscraped, wirebrushed or distressed, as they also mimic nature more authentically.
